Decision-Making process is N⛔T the same as the decision concept in #DecisionIntelligence.

💢At a very high level, when people talk about a decision-making process, it is either of the following:
1️⃣ A decision-making process is the set of steps that a task (e.g. case, issue, item etc.) requires multiple actors to work on to arrive at an outcome (e.g., consensus) about the task.
2️⃣ Or a decision-making process specifies steps (orders) to demonstrate, at the individual level, how it arrives at a decision.
3️⃣ Or an actual process for deciding on an outcome for a specific case, such as the Loan origination process or the credit decisioning process.

In the first instance, this is a typical use case for workflow and business process management solutions. It involves coordination between people and organizing things (systems, data, tools, etc.) around them to get the work done. It has very little to do with decision-making; the only reason we call it a decision-making process is the nuances of the spoken language.

It becomes the second example if it is related to making an actual decision. This is where I argue that a business process is a very wrong choice of techniques, as the purpose of a process is distinctly different from the purpose of a decision. Process techniques should not be used to model decisions. The right choice of modeling decisions is already available, and it is called Decision Model and Notation (DMN).

Also, there is the third case, which many get confused about because it is a mixture of the first and second. This is a case when a process itself requires carrying out a task around a case, which needs lots of situation-based decisions within the process about the case. In this scenario, we need to combine two techniques and technologies: processes (e.g., #BPMN, #UPN, #UML, #Flowchart, etc.) and decisions (#Decision #Model and #Notation – #DMN) together as one is not a replacement or substitute for the other.

✨As we can see, the decision-making process is kind of a Frankenstein. I noticed many professionals who refer to it don't clearly know what they mean to articulate, so it is just a placeholder in their minds for whatever they are talking about. We need to clarify and understand what exactly they mean and what type of the above cases are related to their “decision-making process” in the first place. Then, we can treat that placeholder (decision-making process) accordingly.
