A DMN Boxed Invocation is used to call another decision logic document by passing input values to it. It shows the name of the function and a list of inputs, where each input links a parameter to a value. In other words, an invocation boxed expression binds input values to the parameters of a boxed expression function for execution.

DMN Boxed Invocation helps reuse business logic, such as fee calculations, scoring models, or reusable business rules. Moreover, with Invocation Boxed Expression, a user can pass different inputs to the same logic in different decision scenarios. On the other hand, the boxed Invocation keeps logic modular and makes it easier to update across multiple decisions.

Invocation Boxed Expression

Add to a Boxed Expression

While in a boxed expression document, drag and drop the boxed Invocation from the toolbox into the document.

ToolBox

On the Properties window, set the name of the target logic that you want to invoke and add the inputs to the Bindings.

Binding and Target logic

Add the Boxed Invocation to a DRD

User can add the boxed expression as a node in the DMN project's DRD. Drag and drop the Boxed Expression to a business knowledge node in the DRD, just like other boxed expressions that generally add to the DRD.

Adding Invocation Boxed to Business Knowledge

Give the business knowledge node a name and reference that name in the associated decision as if calling a function and set the result of the decision to a parameter.

For more information on this, see the FlexRule Resource Hub article on the DMN Decision Requirement Diagram.

Summary of DMN Boxed Invocation

A Boxed Invocation is a visual DMN expression used to call another decision logic by binding input values to its parameters. It is like a bridge between reusable logic defined and the specific data used to evaluate it. This structure helps make decision models more modular, readable, and reusable by separating function logic from function usage.
