🤔 What is “Continuous Decisioning”❓

🚩In many of the decision models, the assumption is that the decision model we execute against a case will have a definite answer based on the decision model in the first cycle (or iteration) of decision execution. However, this is a very simplistic view of cases, situations, and decision models.

💫Many times, based on the decisions that we execute on a specific case, we influence the future of the case. Although the case is the same but, it belongs to an altered situation where the decision we had executed has changed the situation of the case. Now, in this new state of the case, the already applied decision is either still applicable or we need a set of new decision models based on the new states of the case and the new situations the case belongs to.

The fact is that the case's final outcome has not yet been determined by the first cycle of decision execution. We still need to continuously execute more decisions on the case until the final outcome is conclusive. Or we determine the outcome is inconclusive, so we need an alternative approach (manual review, domain expert input, marking the case infeasible, etc.) to finalize the case and find the best outcome for the case.

🔖The kind of business decision where a continuous change of state of a case over time does not allow the final decision outcome to be conclusively determined in a single cycle/iteration of decision execution is called continuous decisioning.

A decision model should be able to capture these complex behaviors in a single cohesive model when it comes to #DecisionIntelligence otherwise nothing is intelligent about the static model in a complex world full of uncertainty and constant changes we all face.

There are many reasons the state of the case might change. Therefore, the situation will change, and consequently, the decision should adapt based on the new state and situation. Changes will happen:
🔹from the external environment to the case (i.e. uncertainty)
🔹because of influences of the decision model we applied (executed) on the case
🔹over time and therefore, circumstances of the case change

💥A decision model in #DecisionIntelligence not only includes all #data #ai #ml #LLMs #businessrules #optimization and other techniques but also MUST be dynamic and encompass the changing environments and circumstances where the case lives rather than assuming the case lives in a static, fixed time and space.

💣The #DecisionIntelligence Platform (DIP) should allow the modeling and execution of these complex stateful decisions; otherwise, DIP is just a new fancy name for an old legacy Decision Management Suite (DMS) or Business Rules Management System (BRMS).
