⚠️The Decision Intelligence starts with “Decision”. Read it again. It literally starts with the “Decision”.
Contrary to what you may think, the concept of “decision” is still unclear to many people. Many have their own definition or their own way of representing it.
Some wrongly may also think:
❌ decision is a process
❌decision is business rules
❌decision is data and dashboards
❌decision is machine learning and algorithms
❌decision is an optimization model using constraints
Because of these differences of opinion, people use different techniques and languages to model a decision. So, I believe we do not need to argue about this anymore.
💡Object Management Group® (OMG), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, reviewed and accepted the notation for modeling business decisions in 2015.
✨Decision Model and Notation (or DMN) is a modeling language and notation to represent organizations' decision-making scenarios.
💣Using DMN to model your organizational decision-making will:
• help all stakeholders understand a complex domain of decision-making using easily readable diagrams
• provide a natural basis for discussion and agreement on the scope and nature of business decision-making
• reduce the effort and risk of decision automation projects through graphical decomposition of requirements
• allow business rules to be defined simply and reliably in unambiguous decision tables
• simplify the development of decisioning systems using specifications that may be automatically validated and executed
• provide a structured context for the development and management of predictive analytic models
• enable the development of a library of reusable decision-making components
Although DMN integrated rules modeling as part of the DMN notation, this should not stop innovation from allowing other types of decision logic, such as #optimization, machinelearning, scoring data processing, and so on, to be integrated into a decision model.
🚀What's best is the Decision Model and Notation is not just a beautiful visual diagram. It also provides aspects of Runtime behavior which means the diagrams and model created by DMN with Conformance Level 3 are executable. They are the live specification of your business decisions.
