✨The cornerstone of DI is Decision Management, and Decision Modeling is the critical capability for DIP.
Decision Intelligence (DI) intends to improve decision-making by explicitly defining business decisions and understanding how they are executed and managed.
This intentionality about business decisions has been practiced for a long time in the decision management discipline. The decision management as a principal, defines business decisions explicitly across organizations, functions, groups, or teams and ensures stakeholders understand how decisions are made and executed.
🚩Do not get me wrong. By Decision Management, I do not mean Decision Management Suite (DMS); I mean decision management as a discipline. Even today, many DMS vendors do not have decision management. As DMS evolved from Business Rules Management (BRMS), they do not model and manage decisions as a separate entity. They have processes or rulesets with the label “decision”!
💣To be able to manage decisions, you need to be able to model the decisions in the first place. This is why decision modeling is critical capability of #DecisionIntelligence Platform (DIP).
⚠️ Decision modeling is a technique that uses a formal notation and language to model business decisions. Hence we recognize business decisions as a separate entity, we should not use notations for Process, Data, Workflow, etc. to specify business decisions. Just because you can does not mean you should.
What's the approach then?
💡Decision Model and Notation (DMN) is an open standard that provides notation and language to model business decisions. It is a standard that has been used with many decision professionals over the years. The caveat is you need to make sure your DIP vendor has Decision Model and Notation (DMN) with Conformance Level 3 (CL3). The CL3 ensures that the platform not only allows decision modeling standards but also that those models are not just beautiful visual diagrams on the screen but executable artifacts.
Why is that important?
🚀Because the executable decision models then become the base for #CompositeAI that brings everything to life by combining #businessrules #machinelearning #optimization #data processing and so on. The orchestration capability then connects the #CompositeAI model based on the DMN to the systems, processes, data, and services with which they need to interact. When needed, the orchestration shall involve humans asking for their input or giving the right people the ability to override the automated decisions.
