ST⛔P using the gateways in business processes as a way to make or execute business decisions.

💢Many business process gurus believe that business processes can handle the design and implementation of business decisions. That is correct; you can do everything in business process modeling, such as in the code, but it does not make it the right choice. Additionally, it comes with many drawbacks and costs.

⚠️In business process (BPMN) modeling, gateways are denoted by a 🔶diamond and are called decision nodes. The gateways, i.e., decision nodes, are not the points of making the decision; they are the points of routing a case based on an already-made decision and its outcomes. The decisions should have been executed before the case reached this point in the model. Then, the gateway can route the case based on the outcome of the decision.

🤑 You might say, so what's the point? What are the drawbacks and costs if you do?
🔸Inflexibility: When decisions are hardcoded into a process, it's difficult to change or update them without significant rework. This inflexibility makes responding to changing business needs, customer requirements, or market conditions challenging.
🔸Lack of Transparency: Embedded decisions make understanding the reasoning behind a particular decision difficult. This lack of transparency can lead to confusion, errors, and mistrust among stakeholders and more noise than expected.
🔸Maintenance nightmares: When decisions are embedded in a process, even small changes require significant updates to the entire process. This is time-consuming, costly, and prone to errors and requires managing multiple versions of the process going ahead.

💣Bear in mind that the lifecycle of business decisions is very different from the business processes. This means change will come and rework in the business process will be needed.

🚀By externalizing business decisions and avoiding embedding them, you will:
🔹Make changes quickly and easily
🔹Provide clear visibility into decision-making
🔹Reduce maintenance costs and effort
🔹Scale to meet growing demands
🔹Foster collaboration and teamwork
