⛔ STOP pretending a decision register is Decision Inventory!
Let's not confuse a list of decisions with an inventory of decision knowledge. 😁
📋 A Decision Register records what people already know.
A form. A few fields. A list of decisions. Maybe an owner and a description.
Decision Inventory “discovers” what the organization knows, what it doesn't know, and even what it doesn't know it doesn't know!
It makes visible:
🔹 Hidden decisions buried in policies, documents, systems, and operations.
🔹 Business rules, facts, and dependencies governing those decisions.
🔹 Missing knowledge, ambiguities, contradictions, and unanswered questions.
🔹 Evidence connecting discovered knowledge to its sources.
A register depends on someone knowing what to register.
An inventory helps discover what nobody knew needed to be registered in the first place.
And that is why Discover is the first stage of the Decision-Centric Approach®.
you cannot resolve gaps you don't even know exist.
💥 And you cannot govern decisions you cannot see.
