🛑Just because your software development and IT teams in #insurance use Business Rule Engine #BRE in their tech stack, it does not mean the organization manages business rules effectively or efficiently.
The #insurance industry is very much rule-driven in many areas. The software development and IT teams that are operating in this industry are aware of the notion of rules management. But the problem is the rules management that technical people are talking about is very different from what the #underwriting #claim #adjudication #pricing #products #risks team thinks.
💢However, the whole business rules management practice inside a technical team is summarized as having a business rule engine #bre integration that allows them to change rules more easily. The rule engine and the rules themselves are still embedded in the systems they built. Not only that, the rules modeling techniques often utilize the same generic purpose programming languages they use to build the system themselves. (with a form on configurability at best)
What is the issue with this approach of rules management? The facts are that:
🔸Managing rules does not leave software development and IT teams
🔸Still requires a high-level of competency in software programming/coding
🔸The life-cycle of rules is highly tight to the software, process and system releases and life-cycle
👀So what does good look like? What should insurance providers should aim for? They should aim to manage business rules outside software development and IT teams. Literally splitting the life-cycle of rules from processes and systems. Allowing non-developers to adjust, enhance, and implement business rules across processes and systems.
This is easier said than done. It represents a whole set of new challenges to the organization:
🔸Shifting the authority of change and schedules of deployments
🔸Trusting the other teams (non-technical, SME and ops) by software development and IT for complex change management
🔸Deploying the changes in a secure and controlled manner
🔸Fear of losing control (in IT and software development)
🚀But when done correctly:
🔹It reduces the burden on software development and IT teams and lets them focus on strategic priorities
🔹Puts the change management in the hands of SMEs and the operations team to respond to business needs quicker and more frequently.
